SHAKESPEARE IN CINEMA (KING LEAR)

KING LEAR

1909 – King Lear, directed by J.Stuart Blackton and William V.Ranous. This is a silent, blanck and white film about King Lear done in the United States. It is 10 minutes in length.

 

1910- King Lear (El Rey Lear), directed by Giuseppe de Liguoro. Italian version of King Lear which is 5 minutes in length.

1910 – King Lear (El Rey Lear), directed by Filoteo Alberini and Arturo Ambrosio. It was produced by the productor company Cines, of the Vaticane.

1911 – A Village King Lear (Le Roi Lear au Village), directed by Louis Feuillade. Silent, black and white film  done in France. The story takes place in a contemporary framework.

1953 – King Lear, directed by Andrew McCullough. American production for the television in black and white. This film stars Orson Welles as King Lear.

1954 – Broken Lance, directed by Edward Dmytryk.Good Western which adapts the play to the Far West.

1969 – King Lear (Korol Lir), directed by Grigori Kozintsev. Russian version of Shakespeare’s play in black and white. It is considered one of the best versions of King Lear and one of the greatest adaptations of Shakespeare to cinema.

 

1971 – King Lear, directed by Peter Brook. Black and white film which stars Paul Scofield as King Lear. It is considered a very good version of the play of the same name.

1972 – The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Although this film is based on Mario Puzo’s novel, it can not be denied that this story was inspired on Shakespeare’s King Lear. It is a gangster trilogy with a second part in 1974 and a third one in 1990.

1983 – King Lear, directed Michael Elliott. British version for television starring Laurence Olivier.

1985 – Ran, directed by Akira Kurosawa. Japanese adaptation of the tragedy set in a 16th century Japan.  It won an Oscar for best costume design.

1987 – King Lear, directed by Jean-Luc Godard. American adaptation of the tragedy with Woody Allen as Mr.Alien (uncredited cameo)

1997 – A thousand acres, directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse. The story of this film is inspired in King Lear’s tragedy: a widower wants to divided his land among his three daughters. It stars Michelle Pfeiffer.

1999 King Lear, directed by  Brian Blessed. British production in which the director also stars the main character. It is more than three hours in length.

2001 – The King of Texas, directed by Uli Edel. American film in which the action takes place in the Far West.

2002 – My Kingdom, directed by Don Boyd. British adaptation of King Lear set in the present-day Liverpool. In this case the main character is not a king, but an old and rich pusher.

2008 – King Lear, directed by Trevor Nunn. British version of King Lear for television performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
