SHAKESPEARE IN CINEMA (MACBETH)
MACBETH
1908 – Macbeth, directed by J. Stuart Blackton. It is considered the first film version of this tragedy.
1911 – Macbeth, directed by unknown director. This British film has been lost.
1916 – Macbeth, directed by Beerbohm Tree. Black and white, silent film of American origin.
1948 – Macbeth, directed by Orson Welles. This fim considered one of the best versions of Othello on screen.
1955 – Joe Macbeth, directed by Ken Hughes.Black and white British film set in a context of gangsters.
1957 – Throne of Blood (kumonosu jo), directed by Akira Kurosawa. This film is set in the 16th century Japan.
1962 – Lady Macbeth in Siberia, directed by Wajda. This film was shot in Yugoslavia and it is focus on the evictions to Siberia in the czar era.
1970 – Cabezas cortadas, directed by Glauber Rocha. Brazilian film shot in Spain which is considered a loose version of Macbeth.
1971 – Macbeth, directed by Roman Polanski. Very good British version of the tragedy.
1979 – A Performance of Macbeth, directed by Philip Casson. A Royal Shakespeare Company performance produced by an expert in taking Shakespeare to the screen, Trevor Nunn.
1981 – Macbeth, directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman. Independent American production.
1983 – Macbeth, directed by Jack Gold. This is a British version for the BBC.
1987 – Macbeth, directed by Claude d’Anna. This version is the filming of the performance of Verdi’s opera with the same name.
1991 – Men of Respect, directed by William Reilly. Modern adaptation of Macbeth in the context of gangsters.
1997 – Macbeth, directed by Jeremy Freeston. British version starring Jason Conery.
2001 – Rave Macbeth, directed by Klaus Knoesel. German film set in the world of the damce rave culture.
2001 – Macbeth:The Comedy, directed by Allison L. Licalsi. Comic version of the tragedy of Macbeth.
2001 – Scotland PA, directed by Billy Morrissette. This is a comedy set in the 70’s.
2003 – Maqbool, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. Indian version of Macbeth set in that same country. It has the musical parts of every Bollywood film.
2006 – Macbeth, directed by Geoffrey Wright. Australian film set in the present-day.
2009 – The Third Witch, directed by Chris Noonan. It tells Macbeth’s story from the point of view of one of the witchs
