SHAKESPEARE IN CINEMA (OTHELLO)

OTHELLO

1909 – Othello, directed by Franz Porten. It is a silent, black and white film done in Germany.

 

1922 – Othello, directed by Dimitri Buchowetzki. This is a black and white, silent, German film.

 

 

 

1952 – The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice directed by Orson Welles. Black and white film shot between Morocco and Italy. The Director himself played Othello and Suzanne Cloutier played Desdemona. This film won the Palme d’Or in Cannes Film Festival.

 

 

1955 – Othello (Omenno), directed by Sergei Yutkevich. This is a Soviet version of the tragedy of Othello.

 

1961 –All Night Long, shot directed by Basil Dearden. British film set in London’s jazz scene.

 

 

 

1965 – Othello, directed by Stuart Burge. British film starring Laurence Olivier as Othello.

 

1973 – Othello(Otello), directed by Roger Benamou. Herbert von Karajan directed the Berlin Philarmonic Orchesta in a filming of the performance of Verdi’s opera, Othello.

 

1982 – Othello, the black commandoshot, directed by Max. H Boulois. Spanish-French adaptation filmed in English. In this version Othello is a black U.S. mercenary in Africa.

 

1985 – Othello, directed by Stuart Burge. The film stars in Laurence Olivier.

 

1986 – Othello (Otello), directed by Franco Zeffirelli. This version is a filming of Verdi’s opera based on the Shakespearean tragedy.

 

1990 – Othello, directed by Trevor Nunn. The British director is a specialist in television adaptations of Shakespeare.

 

1995 –  Othello, directed by Olivier Parker. The role of Othello is played by and African-American actor, Laurence Fishburne. Kenneth Branagh played the role of Iago.

 

 

 

1997 – Kaliyattam, directed by Jayaraaj. Indian version of Othello.

 

2001 – “O”, directed by Tim Blake Nelson.  Modern American version of Othello set in a Highschool.

 

2004 – Huapango, directed by Ivan Lipkies. Mexican musical based on Othello.

 

2006 – Omkara, directed by Vishal Bhradwaj. Indian adaptation in which the action takes place in a rural part on India.

 

2008 – Jarum Halus, directed by Mark Tan. Malaysion adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello.
