SHAKESPEARE IN CINEMA (ROMEO AND JULIET)

ROMEO AND JULIET

1912 – Indian Romeo and Juliet, directed by Laurence Trimble. Silent, black and white film done in the United States.

 

1916 – Romeo and Juliet, directed by J. Gordon Edwards. Silent, blanck and white film done in the United States. It stars Theda Bara. The film seems to be lost.

 

 

1920 – Romeo and Juliet in the Snow (Romeo und Julia im Schnee), directed by Ernst Lubitsch. German version of Romeo and Juliet in tone of comedy and set in the Baviera Mountains. It is a silent, black and white film.

 

1924 – Romeo and Juliet, directed by Mack Sennett. Short film.

 

1936 – Romeo and Juliet, directed by George Cukor. American version of Romeo and Juliet which is considered a good version of the play. The only problem is that the main players seem too old to perform the teenage lovers.

 

 

1943 – Romeo and Juliet (Romeo y Julieta), directed by Miguel M.Delgado. Mexican comedy production starring Cantinflas.

 

1949 – Les Amants de Vérone, directed by André Cayatte. Black and white, French film which sets the action in the 20th century.

 

1953 – Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, directed by Roberto D.Webb. American film which tells the story of two rival fisher families. It surprised people for its techincal achievements.

 

 

1954 – Romeo and Juliet, directed by Renato Castellani. This was the first film about Romeo and Juliet in colour

 

1955 – Romeo and Juliet (Romeo i Julietta), directed by Lev Arnshtam and Leonid Lavrovky. Soviet ballet drama based on Shakespare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet.

 

1960 – Romeo, Juliet and darkness (Romeo, Julia a Tma), directed by Jiri Weiss. Loose Czech version of the play, set in Prage during the Nazi occupation.

 

1961 – West Side Store, directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise. Musical version of the tragedy who tells the story of a boy and a girl who fall in love but they belong to rival New York gangs.

 

 

1961 – Romanoff and Juliet, directed by Meter Ustinov. The director also wrote the script and starred the film. The story of Romeo and Juliet is set in the context of the Cold War.

 

1963 – Los Tarantos, directed by Francisco Rovira Belete. Spanish adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy.  The story takes place in a gypsy slum in Barcelona.

 

1966 – Romeo and Juliet, directed by Paul Czinner. British version interpreted by the Royal Ballet.

 

 

 

1968 –  Romeo and Juliet, directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The protagonists of this version of the tragedy are actually teenagers. It was set in Italy in the 15th century Renaissance. It won 2 Oscars.  

 

 

1982 – The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, directed by William Woodman. American version of Romeo and Juliet.

 

1989 – Montoyas y Tarantos, directed by Vicente Escrivá. Spanish version in which the main characters belong to rival gypsy families.

 

1996 – Romeo + Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann. Up-to-date version of Romeo and Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes.

 

 

2000 – Romeo Must Die, directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak. Kun-fu film in which the two rival families are the American and the Chinese mafia.

 

2002 –  Bollywood Queen, directed by Jeremy Wooding. British film full of dance and sing and set in London East End. The love story is between and Indian girl and an Englishman.

 

2005 – Romeo and Juliet get marriage (O Casamento de Romeo e Julieta), directed by Bruno Barreto. Brazilian comedy inspired in Shakespeare and set in the context of football.

 

2005 – Kebab Connection, directed by Anno Saul. German film about immigrant Turks.

 

2006 – Romeo and Juliet: sealed with a kiss, directed by Nibbelink. Animation film inspired in Romeo and Juliet.

 

2006 – High School Musical,   directed by Kenny Ortega. Disney musical for teenagers based on the story of Romeo and Juliet.
